Having a dog that is aggressive toward other dogs isn't easy.
You can't just let them run and play with other dogs. They can be the friendliest pets towards people and turn into monsters once they had enough time to focus on another dog and work themselves up. What to do in a situation like that? Well, I can't give you a recipe that will work wonders but keep something with you that you can distract the dog from focusing on the other dogs. I, for example have to start carrying a ball with me at all times because one of my females just doesn't like other females. That is a very common thing. There are males and females that just don't get along with their own gender and you have to keep them separated. It doesn't mean that you have to get rid of either one of them. Some dogs just don't get along with others.
However, obedience training is a must with dogs like that. Even if it's frustrating and you have the feeling that you just don't get any further you will see small changes. If your dog is ball obsessed or obsesses over any other toy it's all the better because that is something you can use to train them.
I know first hand how frustrating it is to have a dog that is very dominant and wants to dominate and to be in control of E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G!
Sometimes I doubt myself, I doubt that I am good enough to handle a dog like that. She's a very powerful and strong working dog and she needs a strong and powerful handler and I guess it is normal to doubt and question yourself sometimes. Research is another key. Educate yourself on behavior and training methods. Pick what works for you best and stick with it. Look for the right trainers that you and your dog can work with.
You have to be in control at all times. You have to show them that you are the one in control. TRAINING! TRAINING and MORE TRAINING! Even if others don't notice, you will notice small changes. It is easier to call them back, easier to get their attention, they focus more on you instead of other dogs. Just don't give them the time to stare and build themselves up and if they do, distract them and demand their attention. I learned that you can have a dog aggressive dogs attention even though there are other dogs around. I learned how to make her focus on me and only me. All it takes is a ball and she won't even notice whats going on around her.
It can be very frustrating but it makes life easier for everybody involved and by the way, ignore dumb comments. I know I have a hard time ignoring comments and have to hold back but some people don't know anything about your dog, how you train them and still make a dumb remark because they just can't help it.
