Alternative Methods

Every morning, I take the dogs, one by one, into the clicker room and work them individually. Since Yukon was abused by a SchH Trainer and scared of his own shadow I had to find alternative ways to get him out of his shell and re-train the commands that he was so scared about. "Platz" was one of them. Take a good look at him, he's having so much fun working with the Clicker. I am honestly thankful for those who helped me with good advise and suggestions on how to re-train him. He's come a long way and is a great example of what is possible with positive reinforcement.

I just wished that others would start to think outside the box and adopt new and alternative training methods i.e. positive reinforcement.

Usually I start off with the nose-touch. The nose-touch pretty much helps with everything. Once they know to follow the hand you can lure them in pretty much any position you want. That is how I re-trained "Platz", I used my hand to lure him into the down-stay and added the command later on.

Here is Indra doing some clicker training. Funny thing is that you can hear Zenzy in the background. She was complaining that she didn't come first today. That is how much they enjoy working with the clicker and to me it's proof that a dog can have lots and lots of fun working with his handler. It all depends on how you do it.

Hello Sandra,

good job on the clicker training. Maybe the session with Yukun was a little bit to long. At the very end he is not willing to provide anymore behaviour on it's own so you had to help him a bit. I think you should make a break when your dog is getting exited and confident about what he is been doing.

Your training with Indra is as good as it can get right now. She has to develop much more drive to stay active. Maybe you should try to put some more emotion into the szene, make her more happy and try to reinforce her drive. Anyways, good job and keep it up.

Thank you so much for your input Detlef. I am always looking for input and advise on how to make it better.

Yes, it probably was a little bit too long for Yukon and Indra has to build more drive and confidence.

The problem is that she isn't as food driven as the others and I am not sure if I should skip a meal in the evening because as a young dog she needs it.

What do you think?

Hi Sandra,

well I think it won't hurt if you skip the food in the evening once in a while. It does not mean that she will get less food. She just need to discover that food is not always available.

It is going to increase her food drive if she has to work for it, because it is the same with us human beings, things we get for free are not so important like things we have to work for.
